Bogota is the capital city of Colombia and is also far and away the largest city in the country, making it a cultural and cosmopolitan hotspot. With that, it has also grown to be one of the hippest and coolest cities in South America because of its amazing cuisine, art, architecture, history, and culture. There are hundreds of interesting things to do in Bogota and I’d recommend at least 3-5 days here to understand and truly enjoy the great things it has to offer. Since this is such a big city, it can be tough to decide where to stay, so here we’ve got a comprehensive take on the best Bogota hostels so you can best enjoy this city.

Colombia has struggled for some time to shake off its negative image because of the drug trade, violence, and crime but in recent years this country has emerged as one of the best destinations in all of South America and is a place where I have spent literally years exploring.

Bogota Aerial View Best Bogota hostels

First, we’ll cover a little more about Bogota, and then take a good look at the coolest and best neighborhoods of Bogota to stay so you can check out what the area around the hostel has to offer and whether it is the type of place you’d want to explore and be in.

After that, we’ll jump straight into the best Bogota hostels ranked from #1 to #12. And then at the end, we will get into the best hostels for every kind of traveler, whether you are looking to party, are a solo traveler, looking for peace and quiet, and artsy place, or pretty much anything else, so don’t miss out.

About the Capital City of Bogota

Bogota is perched up high in the Colombian Andes region about 2,640 meters above sea level (8,660 feet). With about 9 million people in Bogota, you could just imagine how large and overwhelming this city can be to first-time visitors.

Just like any other big city in South America, you will be able to better understand it by tackling each neighborhood (or barrios if you like) one-by-one. Here are some of the coolest neighborhoods you might want to stay in to serve as your base while you are here.

Coolest Neighborhoods to Stay in Bogota

  • Candelaria, Centro Historico – Historically significant to Bogota as it is the first-ever neighborhood established back in the 1500s. Here is where you will find the main tourist attractions like plazas, churches, parks, and museums. Walk down cobblestone streets and discover graffiti art of the city. La Candelaria can also be a little gritty and sometimes even sketchy thanks to its proximity to “bad” neighborhoods. This is the #1 place to stay for budget travelers, and also first-time visitors.

La Candelaria best Bogota hostels

  • Teusaquillo – Known for its neo-colonial French and English inspired architecture from the mid-20th century since this place is where the richest of the rich Bogotano families used to live. It is a relatively safe neighborhood to walk around and wander off to little shops and cafes.
  • Chapinero – Many consider this the coolest neighborhood in all of Bogota. It is home to great shopping centers as well as historic architecture and open green spaces. This is a cool place to be, and where I would recommend if you have gotten your fill of the Candelaria tourist attractions.

Panorama from Chapinero Best Bogota Hostels

  • Usaquen – This is the street food haven in Bogota and this should be in everyone’s itinerary when visiting in this city. You can also find budget-friendly hostels and hotels side by side with interesting restaurants and cafes.
  • Zona T – Also known as the Zona Rosa, this is the center of upscale shops, restaurants, malls, and so forth. Not only that, but it is one of the best centers of nightlife in the city. If you are looking for slightly more upscale or more party-centric, then this is your place.

Personally, I would recommend most first-time travelers to stay in La Candelaria, if they are here to do the typical tourist attractions. Like anywhere in Latin America, it is important to always exercise common sense here (and everywhere else in Bogota). If you are the type that would prefer being outside of the main core, then Chapinero would by my second choice — this is the coolest area in general, and is best for those staying longer here in Bogota, in my opinion.

My order of best neighborhoods in Bogota for tourists would be:

  1. La Candelaria — Center of tourist life, budget-friendly
  2. Chapinero — Coolest overall neighborhood for those who more enjoy exploring food, restaurants, etc.
  3. Usaquen — Further out, which makes it a more calm and relaxing place to be, away from the hustle and bustle.
  4. Teusaquillo — A great option if you still want to be central but not right in the heart of the more popular areas.
  5. Zona T — Best for those who have a slightly higher budget, enjoy the more upscale, access to chain restaurants, or want to be in the center of nightlife.

Now that you know a little more about the best neighborhoods in Bogota, are where might be best for you, we can continue with our guide to the 12 best Bogota hostels to stay in while you are in the city. Let’s start now with this long list!

Hobu Hostel
Neighborhood: Chapinero

Hobu Hostel was done in traditional British architecture just like much of the Chapinero neighborhood of the 1950s (first records of the house state that it was built around this time), complete with the old staircase and stained glass windows. It was later refurbished and redesigned with industrialist-minimalism in mind. True to its clever acronym of a name, HOBU stands for “hostel but unique”.

Strategically located, Hobu Hostel is in a great position near Chapinero Central, Zona G (aka Gourmet for the many incredible restaurants), as well as a short distance from the upscale Zona T and the historic center of La Candelaria.

best bogota hostels hobu hostel

Chapinero has more upscale establishments in the area and a mix of low-key and residential also, which makes it more conducive for first time Bogota visitors who don’t want to be in the historic downtown. But within a few minutes, you can reach these cool places by walking or a short Uber ride.

One can also find an almost endless amount of restaurants, clubs/discos, bars, malls, and some cultural events in Chapinero. But mind you, the streets around the hostel have little to no noise at all so this becomes a haven of peace and quiet during the night.

Hobu Hostel room rates start at $8/night with Continental breakfast and this property offers beds in 4-, 6-, and 8-bed mixed dorm rooms and private rooms with shared and private bathrooms. The dorm bunks were designed by a local steel company that mounted them firmly to the ceiling. The property also offers a fully equipped and well-stocked kitchen which you can utilize.

best bogota hostels hobu hostel

It is worth mentioning that this hostel supports local farmers and markets. They purchase their local Colombian fruits, eggs, vegetables, and other ingredients from the countryside areas near Bogota particularly Cundinamarca and Tolima. They also are eco-friendly and practice recycling and reusing materials.

If you want to squeeze in some work, you can work from the terrace or the more convenient business center. The cozy living room can also be where you can relax after work. The owners wanted this to be home to digital nomads, budget travelers, and those who live their life on the road.

Socialize with other hostel guests in the bar with delicious cocktails and homemade drinks. You can play some video games in the PlayStation area. But I suggest you have to enjoy a sunset view on the terrace and see the landscape of Bogota from there.

Hostel-arranged social activities range from local club-hopping, walking tours, bike tours, graffiti art tours, and national park tours. Just choose or personalize your own choice with the help of the staff’s recommendations — and don’t miss my picks for the best Bogota tours.

If you want to see another side of Bogota, the Hobu Hostel in Chapinero is a great choice to stay. Definitely, a trendy yet relaxed place to stay in Bogota.

The hostel is set in a historic building just next to a park and is a great position if you want to be centrally located between Chapinero and La Candelaria. This hostel believes that low budget travel accommodation does not mean poor design or discomfort. Well-thought-out dens, sleeping areas, and shared lounges were done in dark hardwood and cushioned seating. And the bathrooms were some of the best and exquisitely designed bathrooms in all the hostels I’ve seen.

Here’s a map of the best hostels in Bogota so that you can better understand where each place is situated within the city.

More About Bogota

Bogota rivals any of the big cosmopolitan cities of Latin America like Lima, Mexico City or Buenos Aires. It is a world-class urban destination worth any traveler’s budget and time… While most people choose to stay in Bogota for a couple of days, it is absolutely a place that deserves more time to truly discover its charm, because Bogota might take time to peel back the layers and discover what makes this place truly cool. At a minimum, I’d budget three to five days here, but spring for a week, if you can.

best bogota hostels Sector Antiguo de la Ciudad de Bogotá3

Colonial and cosmopolitan, Bogota is a special place in Colombia where charming century-old plazoletas are towered by modern skyscrapers, a place where art and museums meet with incredible dining, lively nightlife, and a mix of people from all over Colombia as well as other countries…

Traveling to other parts of Colombia? Be sure to check out my articles about what to do in Medellin (the city I call home) and Cartagena. And don’t miss my comprehensive guide for traveling to Colombia with all the information you need to plan a better trip.

If you haven’t yet, be sure to book your lodging in Bogota now via Booking.com to save money and secure your reservation. I use and recommend World Nomads to protect myself against illness, injury, and theft, and would suggest you do the same!

Colombia Travel Tips

Important tips and resources for planning an amazing trip to Colombia, based on my years of traveling and living in Colombia.

  2. Plan a rough itinerary and how long you will spend at each destination. Use an itinerary planning service for custom recommendations and pick up Lonely Planet Colombia.
  3. Work a little every day to teach yourself Spanish, you'll want to know as much as possible before you arrive.
